Enjoy the adventures of ‘Gunna the goanna’, the inventive, fictional animal character that is central to this exhibition. The Tinytoreum features tiny Museum treasures that have inspired children’s tales and illustrations by author Jackie French and illustrator Bruce Whatley.
Renowned for their much-loved Shaggy Gully children’s books, French and Whatley have created exciting tales about some of their fictional animal characters from the series, inspired by over 50 rare and intriguing objects from the Powerhouse Museum’s collection.
The fictional story in the exhibition, “Gunna the goanna’s big ideas”, features Gunna and some of his Shaggy Gully friends including Paul Platypus, Freddie Flea and Mothball Wombat. Tiny by nature or tiny by comparison, the small Museum objects with their clever detail, fine work and engaging features, “activate the brain of Gunna” whose adventures with his friends are creatively told alongside the tiny or small-scale object displays.
One charming tale is cleverly woven around a toy submarine and small ivory mermaid. The submarine becomes Gunna’s first machine for his schoolmate tiny Paul Platypus who is scared of water. The submarine made it possible for small Paul to have dinner with his family. Years later, Paul would become a famous underwater explorer, nosing a larger version of his submarine deep into the lakes of secret caves. This is where he would meet the love of his life, the mysterious mermaid!
Other tiny treasures of inspiration in Gunna’s adventures include porcelain animals and Bunnykin figurines; model and toy aircraft, cars and bikes; miniature shoes and furniture; and a Victorian doll house - to name a few in the exhibition.
The Tinytoreum is the second exhibition in the Powerhouse Museum’s The Odditoreum series of collection-based displays for families featuring Australian artists and authors.
