Image of wizard's hat

Make a wizard's hat complete with wizardy symbols.

You will need:

Image of things you need

two sheets of black cardboard
metallic or coloured cardboard
stapler
scissors
sticky-tape
glue

Cogs' corner: If you were a wizard

If you were a wizard, what would you wiz
In but an instant - with a bang and a fiz?
In a click of your fingers and a magical word
You could be anywhere in the whole wide world

On a tropical island, scuba diving,
Or on a race-track, speedily driving
You could be an astronaut who walks on the Moon
(Not a child told to tidy his room)

Imagine if you had magical powers
How it could save you hours and hours
Your homework - done in the blink of an eye
You’d just know the answers without having to try

You could be a sports champion at whatever you choose
Winning medals and trophies – never to lose
You could be a musician, and play lead guitar
Your fans would adore you from near and from far

You could fly through the air with the greatest of ease
Looking down on the rooftops, the roads and the trees
You could glide with the birds, squawk with the seagulls
And soar even higher, up with the eagles.

You could ride your tiger, Tiggles, to school
And not use petrol for your fuel
You could use your powers to make it rain
And we’d never have to have drought again.

Imagine the wonders you could weave
If you were a wizard with tricks up your sleeve.
You could have so much wonderful fun
Making magical miracles for everyone

Performance costume This fabulous costume was used in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. Can you imagine a wizard wearing a cape like this?
Take a closer look.

Step by step:

Image of step 1

1. Roll one cardboard sheet into a cone shape. Secure with a small piece of sticky-tape and put the cone onto your head.

Image of step 2

2. Adjust the cone to fit your head. Tape the top and bottom.

Image of step 3

3. Cut off the excess cardboard so that the cone is even.

Image of step 4

4. Cut out and assemble the brim, following the instructions on the template. Then slide the brim over the cone. Trim inside to fit and secure with sticky-tape.

Image of step 5

5. Diagonally fold the cone three times in different directions to create a crumpled, dishevelled look.

6. Cut out decorative templates (or design your own) and attach them to the hat using strong paper glue or sticky-tape.
