stick glue

cardboard (white or coloured)
printouts of templates
ribbon (for gift tags)

Zoe's corner: A Victorian Hobby

When great grandma was a girl making scrapbooks was a popular hobby. A bit like stickers today, they came in pre-cut sheets, called scraps, which were glued into large, especially-made books with blank pages. The types of pictures are just like you might collect today, flowers, butterflies, baby farm animals, and Christmas themes. Christmas scraps were also used to make tree decorations, cards and even decorated biscuits and cakes. These pictures are from a scrapbook made between 1880 and 1890. It was given to the Powerhouse Museum by Neville Williams in 1981.

Step by step:

1. Print out the template sheets that you like. Cut out each image, leaving the white edge if you want.

2. Place the templates onto different coloured card. You can also layer two or more coloured card.

3. Measure and cut out your card with scissors ( or a craft knife for adults ) to your desired size.

4. Using a craft knife or scissor blade, score lightly to get a nice fold.

5. Cover the images to the edge with stick glue. Decorate your card using ribbon and other decoration or use our Christmas card pieces templates.

6. To make swing tags for gifts or to hang on your Christmas tree, punch a hole and thread through with ribbon. Instructions for swing tags are in Part 1.
